Three-Year-Old Wants to Govern New Jersey

And is very upset that he can’t.

And while we assume many Youtube videos from one’s youth would not be helpful when on the campaign trail, Future Jesse can actually claim that he’s always felt the need to get involved and make his state great. But what kinds of extra services will the state provide once Gov. Jesse raises property taxes? (Were we registered New Jersey voters, we’d vote for him based on the fact that his interest in politics seemingly comes from Gov. Schwarzenegger’s role as the Kindergarten Cop)

His parents really shouldn’t be so dismissive of his desire to run. After all, he’s not going to run in college.

How-to Play the Mighty Ukulele

One of Hawaii’s best exports

Over the past couple years, you may have noticed a resurgence in ukulele popularity. It certainly hadn’t escaped Bunch’s resident nostalgia blogger Cynthia Kinnunen, nor our go-to source for what’s new and hip in music, Beth Blenz-Clucas. (Beth clued us into Heidi Swedberg’s awesome ukulele stylings, Sukey Jump Music. Swedberg is best known as George Costanza’s fianceé Susan)

In fact, someone has gone so far as to make a documentary about the diminutive string instrument: Mighty Uke — The Amazing Comeback of a Musical Underdog.

So what makes the uke so popular? Its sweet tones? Its relative accessibility? Maybe the thought that you too could re-imagine classics like “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”?

So what are you waiting for? Grab yourself a uke, check out this little video and start playing some sweet tunes!

Bright and Springy Flower Crowns

Catherine Romano blogs about crafty projects for kids and parents

We recently returned from California and I was so inspired by the lush, green grass, pretty wild flowers and bright sunny days (with a few rainy breaks) — I suppose I didn’t realize how much I missed the signs of spring.

Now, back in Toronto, I wanted my new Make It! post to include flowers so I made a trip to the dollar store, asked my son to pick out his favourite flowers and created these fun floral crowns. Take a look:

Materials:

  • Wire Cutters
  • Fabric flowers
  • Flexible silver wire
  • Floral wire to attach the flowers to the wire crown
  • Green tape (painters tape, masking tape, or floral tape to protect the head from any pointy, wire ends)

News Round-Up March 31: Anti-War Cry of the Panda Dad, Russell Brand Vs. The Mommy Bloggers and Disliking Charlie

What we’re reading today:

1. It’s been a while since we talked Tiger Moms, no? And while there’s been no shortage of rebuttals, we think this one from an American dad living and working in Beijing is worthwhile. Alan Paul, a freelance writer who can therefore work from home and be around the kids, is the Panda Dad: “Happy to parent with cuddliness, but not afraid to show some claw” Via New York Times

2. One feminist new mom, who hadn’t been feeling super attractive, is, however briefly, totally into a certain acronym she’d previously found really gross.

3. Her Bad Mother, Catherine Connors, talks to Russell Brand about the Easter Bunny and the nature of infinite space, like you do.

Perez Hilton Writes a Kids’ Book

Will you read The Boy With the Pink Hair?

In September, celebrity blogger Perez Hilton will join the likes of Madonna, Bill Cosby, John Travolta, Sarah the Duchess of York and many more as a children’s book author. In regards to celebrity-penned children’s books, we mostly agree with the Guardian’s Ed Pilkington, who figured celebrity reasoning would go thusly: “I’ve been making up bedtime stories for my children and suddenly I’ve had a brainwave. These stories are good! These stories are brilliant! I would be failing in my moral duty to my adoring public if I did not put them down on paper.”

But we’re kinda thinking we’re siding with the folks who think Perez’ book could be pretty good. Gossip or not, he actually writes everyday, plus he’s snarky and fun. He’s a little bit one of them, but also a little bit one of us. And if the celeb-bedtime story needs to have a big moral, a writer could do worse than embracing one’s individuality.

Turn Coffee Filters Into Spring Flowers

Check out these exotic-looking blooms

Since we’re still hearing weather reports with the phrase “wind chill” in them, it might be a while before we’re puttering around in the soil for real. That’s no reason not to have fresh flowers around the house. Grab some coffee filters, see what kinds of colour combinations the kids can come up with and make these Coffee Filter Flowers from Tinker Lab.

You’ll need:

  • Jars with watercolors or food colouring
  • Flat-bottom coffee filters
  • Droppers or paint brushes
  • Tray to catch spills
  • Covered table
  • Green Pipe Cleaners

Steps:

  • Squeeze, drop, splash or paint watercolours onto coffee filters (which are on your spill-catching tray)
  • Let them dry overnight
  • Stack five or so filters on top of each other
  • Accordian-fold those filters and secure them with a pipe cleaner, soon to be flower stem, in the middle
