Family Portrait #1 – Inspired by the Dutch Masters

Photographer Hendrik Kerstens uses household objects to recreate portraits of the Dutch Masters with his daughter as subject. His beautiful images inspired Steph at Crooked House to try the same and she recruited her son Luke for a photoshoot.

Happy Birthday Toronto!

The home city of Bunch Headquarters turns 175-years-old today.  And we have to admit, our city is looking pretty great for its age.

It’s hard to find a cake big enough for 175 candles, so why don’t you celebrate by enjoying one (or a few) of Bunch’s favorite places in Toronto!

Fun Facts: 20 Surprising Muppet Character Stories

Almost everyone has watched The Muppet Show and Sesame Street.  But, even if you’ve seen every episode, there is bound to be something on this list that will surprise you.

Mental Floss recently compiled the back story of 20 different Jim Henson creations for CNN, with hilariously interesting results.

Here’s what they have to say about my favorite, Oscar the Grouch:

10. Oscar the Grouch is performed by the same guy who does Big Bird, Carroll Spinney. Spinney said he based Oscar’s cranky voice on a particular New York cab driver he once had the pleasure of riding with. He was originally an alarming shade of orange. In Pakistan, his name is Akhtar and he lives in an oil barrel. In Turkey, he is Kirpik and lives in a basket. And in Israel, it’s not Oscar at all — it’s his cousin, Moishe Oofnik, who lives in an old car.

Amelie Jr.

There is no shortage of precocious kid videos on the internet. But, when Capucine (dubbed Amelie Jr. by the blogosphere) became famous on the net, as a result of her whimsical storytelling skills and adorable French accent, her mother decided to put the attention to good use by focusing it on those in need and teaching her daughter about philanthropy.

DIY: I Spy Book

Whitney, over at rookiemoms.com, had an amazing idea that turned into a great project.  She and her four-year old grabbed a bunch of random objects, had a super-fun photo shoot, and they created their own special I Spy book.

By making it yourself, you’ll be able to determine the level of difficulty, and your bunch will love the novelty of searching for, and recognizing, their favorite toys and objects from around the house, on the page.

Another great idea is to create your custom I Spy around special themes or family inside jokes.  We love the idea of opening up a book to pages like: Under Jen’s Bed, The Kitchen Junk Drawer, Things Sam Won’t Eat, or Matt’s Superhero Collection. Once you’re done, you can upload your pictures to a self-publishing site to create your own glossy, bound books.
