Scott Schultz of Yo Gabba Gabba!

Bunchland families could teach you a thing or two about having fun. You see, for them, hangtime is serious business. In Play List, we ask families about the top five awesomest things they have ever done together and get an amazing illustrator to draw them, and we get blown away every time.

  • CITY: Brea, California
  • OUR BUNCH: Scott, 38, co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba! Ruth, 34, hair stylist. Max, 9, genuine video game fiend. Oliver, 6, snuggly dog lover. Harper, 2, active player. Birdie (working title), bun in the oven. Charlie, dog.

Scott Schultz is probably one of the coolest people we’ve ever had the pleasure of interviewing, for a number of reasons. 1. He comes across as a super nice, genuinely friendly guy. We totally want to go for ice cream with him and his brood. 2. He’s a loving dad with three kids, a new baby daughter on the way and a dog who he says resembles either Toto or Benji. 3. He’s just, you know, only the co-creator of Yo Gabba Gabba, possibly the most mind-blowingly amazing kids’ show ever to grace our TV screens since the golden heyday of Sesame Street.

As a kid, Scott got to peek behind the curtain at the making of musical variety shows thanks to his director dad. Scott’s kids get a similar behind-the-scenes look at the making of a TV phenomenon, and they get to do creative and fun activities with their parents to boot. Scott shared his particularly amazing Play List with us.

Nickel! Nickel!: The last remaining video game arcade left. As loud as a rock show, half the games are broken, outdated technology, but there’s something exciting and strangely social about an arcade. It’s like going to the movies rather than watching a video at home.

Home movie projects: We are all amateur directors on the weekend. Currently we are finishing Max’s five-minute opus titled Link’s Adventure to Find the Lucky Star with Three Sprites, Chapter 38. He’s the writer, director and star. Most of his cousins and friends have supporting roles. It’s a complex shoot that includes illegal firecrackers that explode, miniature clay models, flaming hairspray cans and lots of other special effects. Next up will be Oliver’s debut film, which will include both the Mario Brothers and Harry Potter. I am really excited to read his script.

Gem-o-rama: Our yearly weekend trip to Trona, California where we dig through mud and salt flats for magic crystals. We find lots of crystals but no magic ones…yet.

Crawdad hunting in the canal near our house. Big rubber boots and lots of strange lost objects are found. All crawdads are caught then released.

Weekday, after work Disneyland trips: No lines, two rides, and we’re home before bedtime.
